Ozone is a gaseous molecule composed of three oxygen atoms. Although the oxygen molecule (O2) is stable, ozone (O3) is an unstable molecule. The first medical use of ozone was based on Albert Wolff to treat gangrene and other serious injuries of German soldiers during the First World War. The first ant event to be taken as a therapeutic agent for ozone was in a scientific meeting called as the 59th German Surgical (59th Meeting of the German Surgical Society), Dr. Erwin Payr made a presentation on his own cases under the heading "Ozone Applications in Surgery". After that date, until the 1980s, there were various doctors and researchers who applied ozone treatment on their own. After 1980s , scientific studies on ozone use for medical purposes and case series have started to increase rapidly.

Ozone therapy is a treatment method that uses the two potent "antioxidant" and "antiinflammatory" potencies of the human body and strengthens the body against diseases by causing an alarm reaction. Researches over the past two decades have shown that ozone treatment contributes to many of the human body's own therapeutic potentials.

Ozone treatment alarms the defense cells called white blood cells and increases their ability to fight diseases. With this feature, ozone therapy creates a kind of "vaccination" effect on white blood cells. As it is known, vaccines are used against a single disease ;thus stimulating white blood cells for a "specific" disease. Causing “non-specific" warning, ozone therapy stimulates the defense system. With this feature, it shows therapeutic effects for various types of disease from infectious diseases to heart failure. This is defined as "increasing body resistance" in the community.

In response to this activation caused by repeated ozone therapy sessions, the body's immune cells produce messengers (message carriers) called cytokines. They notify other immune cells by causing a chain reaction throughout the entire immune system that is stimulated to resist disease. This leads to very successful results in the application of medical ozone, especially when the immune system is weak or impaired.

The third group of cells found in blood is thrombocytes, also called blood platelet. These cells are responsible for blood clotting as well as for the blood vessels to function well. Ozone therapy also stimulates these cells, thereby increasing their secretion of growth factors. So that,” increased blood vessel formation” and increased perfusion for impaired tissue occurs.
